Private or Shared Room on a Yoga Retreat? Questions to Compare

Compare a private or shared yoga retreat room by asking four separate questions: who occupies the room, which beds are supplied, who uses the bathroom and how the price is calculated. A room name alone may leave one of those answers unclear.

Start with how you want to spend the hours between activities. You may value having your own space, enjoy travelling with a friend or prefer a room arrangement that leaves more of your budget for the trip. Ask for the actual layout and terms before deciding.

Separate room occupancy from bed type

A twin arrangement generally describes two separate beds, while a double arrangement may mean one larger bed. Confirm the exact configuration rather than relying on a thumbnail or room label. A room with two beds is not automatically shared with another booking; it can sometimes be reserved for one person.

Ask whether a shared rate means sharing with someone you name or being matched with another participant. If the organiser matches guests, ask about the occupancy limit, matching arrangements and what happens if no suitable roommate is available. Do not assume a particular policy applies to every retreat.

Check the bathroom separately

A private bedroom can have a shared bathroom, and a shared bedroom can have a bathroom used only by that room’s occupants. Ask where the bathroom is, how many people use it and whether the advertised room has the facilities shown in the photograph.

As a clear example of the distinction, Vikasa’s own accommodation page describes single-occupancy Yoga Cave rooms with shared bathrooms. This is a room-layout reference, not an affiliate recommendation or a promise about availability.

Yoga Vidya Mandiram, Rishikesh

The three-day Rishikesh programme lists private single, twin-shared and triplet-shared options. Its description says shared rooms are arranged by gender, with stated family/couple exceptions, and describes attached bathrooms. Ask which specific option your quote covers and confirm the arrangement for your own booking.

YogaBee, near Bentota, Sri Lanka

YogaBee’s official packages page states that rooms are private and shared only when guests book together. When checking the three-day YogaBee programme, confirm single occupancy or the bed arrangement for two people. Do not interpret a twin-room option as automatic roommate matching.

These examples were checked on 2 November 2026 and illustrate different questions to ask. They are not a ranking of retreats or confirmation that a room is available for your dates.

Compare the total quote on the same basis

Check whether the displayed amount is per person, per room or for the whole stay. Compare the same number of nights, included meals and programme before deciding that one room option costs less. Ask about any single-occupancy supplement, taxes, deposits or extra-night charges that apply to your exact selection.

If you are booking with a friend, clarify whether both names appear on the booking and what happens to the room price if one person cancels. A shared-room price can depend on two people attending; read the relevant terms before paying.

Think about the everyday arrangement

Consider wake-up times, evening routines, luggage space, charging points and room access between sessions. If you like to listen to music, read or make calls in your room, agree on shared-space expectations with your travel companion. Ask about quiet hours and communal areas rather than assuming a private bedroom guarantees silence.

For access requirements, ask for specific information about steps, bathroom layout and the route to the practice space. A broad label such as “comfortable” does not answer a practical access question.

Send one clear accommodation enquiry

For these dates and this room option, please confirm the number of occupants, exact beds, bathroom arrangement and total price. Is sharing limited to people booking together, or do you match participants? Which terms apply if my travel companion cancels or a shared-room place cannot be filled?
